We're dedicating this week's post to raise awareness on the importance of bathroom safety. Let's face it: America is aging fast, and the rate in Marin County is definitely faster. According to the U.S. Administration for Community Living, almost 1 in 5 Americans-- 72.1 million people-- will be over the age of 65. In Marin County, that rate increases to more than 1 in 3 residents. A study by the University of Michigan found that one-third of adults over the age of 60 have difficulty getting in and out of the shower or tub, and according to the CDC, falls are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries among older adults.

They are not alone: most non-fatal injuries among children younger than 15 are caused by bathroom-related falls. Thankfully, most falls are preventable. For independent at-home seniors, that means being conscious of your limitations as you age, and take steps to make your bathroom (and the rest of your home) a safer environment to compensate for such limitations. For people who are responsible for children and older adults, that means exercising pre-cautions and close supervision. Easier said than done, right?
Food for thought: In 2012, the direct medical costs of falls (adjusted for inflation) were $30 billion (see the source). Imagine how much it would be fifteen years from now!
